Observance of Memorial Day

Memorial Day U.S. - 1

We gather on Memorial Day to remember and honor the uncommon valor and selfless service of those who died in conflict for the ideals of our Nation. They were Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines, men and women, from all races and creeds, from every state and territory of the Union, and from all walks of life who stepped forward and answered when America called. Their service and sacrifice allows us to gather freely throughout America, and to celebrate a Memorial Day weekend that offers the hope and promise of a brighter future. That future is bright for this country and for freedom loving countries everywhere, purchased in great measure by the courage, and the sacred commitment of American Soldiers since the founding of our Nation.

America continues to face threats to democracy and freedom around the world. On this Memorial Day the world remains a dangerous place, and American soldiers stand ready worldwide to protect freedom loving nations from terrorists and tyrants who would destroy our values. I have seen our troops in the theater of operations; have seen their tough and dangerous conditions, their hardship, and their sacrifice, and always their unwavering resolve. Their work is professional and honorable, and their cause is just. Many have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. Every generation has had its heroes; this generation is no different, nor is their cause less worthy.

What compels this kind of sacrifice? The answer is both simple and eloquent at the same time. It is reflected in the words of former President George W. Bush: “Whenever people are given a choice in the matter, they prefer lives of freedom to lives of fear.” That desire for liberty called to our ancestors at the birth of this Republic, and today it still drives us to do the right thing for those who hunger after liberty and justice.

Memorial Day is first and foremost about honoring those who gave their lives for the ideals we cherish. And yet there are other purposes we can take from this occasion. In our remembrance today we are given an opportunity to reconnect to our National history, and to renew our own commitment to the values of America. The example of unalloyed sacrifice for country is one that each generation must remember and relearn. Our commitment to the fallen must also be to live our own lives as fully as possible, and always to be willing and able to give back to our families, our communities, our Nation, and our world. By remembering the sacrifice of our military, Memorial Day provides all citizens the opportunity to reflect on the purpose of their own lives and on their own commitment to the values of this great Republic.
