About the Center for Excellence in Education

Center for Exellence in EducationThe Center for Excellence in Education with its emphasis on STEM scholarship is a natural fit for LTG (R) Huntoon. He was most recently the Superintendent (President) of the US Military Academy, which was the first engineering school in the US, founded in 1802. Even today, all graduating cadets receive a Bachelor of Science degree and must successfully complete a rigorous curriculum of science, technology, math and engineering (STEM) subjects. West Point also emphasizes STEM in summer programs for middle school students from across the US, and encourages STEM programs in continuous outreach from its highly ranked academic departments.

The Center for Excellence on Education has three fundamental programs – its annual competitions for outstanding scholarship in STEM at the secondary school level, its annual competition in the biological sciences, and its programs for the development and recognition of gifted STEM teachers. These programs are international in scope and in their student makeup. And the outcomes are far reaching — they contribute significantly to the development of highly successful young men and women who will go on to resolve the great STEM centered challenges of the US and the world in this increasingly complex and interdependent global landscape.
